Mumbles and Musings

What I Did With My Design Degree

Hello everyone, and welcome to our first ever post! It has been a few months coming and I am very excited to be able to finally share this project with you.

My journey has been all over the place (quite literally). I was studying in the science stream my whole teenage life, but I was never cut out to be a doctor or an engineer. I took an undergraduate architecture degree before finally settling in product design and business. It was only while I was in the UK doing my Master’s degree that I realised what I truly wanted to do. I want to become an entrepreneur a designpreneur, a designer with entrepreneurial skills. I have always dreamed of starting my own business and I believe that this website is just one of the many steps I will take in achieving them. I honestly do not know how this website will be like in 5 months, let alone 5 years. It may become the next Dezeen or Design Milk (two design websites that I truly admire – and the sources of my inspiration), or it may not even take off from the ground at all. Nevertheless, I am willing to put in my time and effort to build this and turn it into something that I (and hopefully you) can be proud of, learning from the many mistakes that I will (inevitably) make along the way.

This isn’t a vanity project. It is a chance to build a platform to showcase the best that the design world has to offer. I started this website initially as a way to share the most inspiring design stories in the world, from quirky designs to products that solve the big issues. It soon came to my realisation that there are so many talented designers out there who are not getting the recognition they deserve. It is my passion to see small businesses and designers grow. My postgraduate thesis was a business plan for a design consultancy that would tap into the vast network of talented students and freelance designers, giving them a chance to prove their talent and gain valuable working experience. While that idea was put on hold, I hope that with this website (and your continued support) we may carry on showcasing the best talent the world has yet to discover for many years to come.

So what other awesome stuff can you expect from us? Currently we have three columns that we will update as often as we can. Design Digest is where you will find most of our stories: from the latest trends, to innovative products, and fanboy-ing the latest iPhone release. On our Feature Friday section we talk to designers and artists from all over the world. Finally, Mumbles and Musings is where we’ll post updates, talk about anything design-related (or not) and everything else in between. Earlier on I mentioned that we’d like to help small businesses and designers who are just starting out, so occasionally we may feature posts like How to Start Your Design Business 101 and What Not To Do If You Want To Fail Your Startup. We’re not experts (I certainly am not) but we’ll share whatever experiences we have and hopefully they’ll turn out to be useful for you. We hope the material published here will excite and motivate you to do wonderful things. We would love to know if we inspired you in any way, and please do feel free to let us know what you’d like to see on our website.

From time to time we will feature and promote affiliate products on our page. However, Designplusgood is not an online store. Our website is supported and funded by the sales of these affiliate products. Clicking on any product will take you to our posts promoting the particular product. We’ll then link you to the website where the product can be found, should you need to read more about it. If you do decide to make a purchase through our affiliate links, it would greatly help us keep this website running.

So thank you very much for dropping by, and please stay around for as long as you like. Follow us and like us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest to stay updated with the latest posts. Leave a comment below – we’d like to hear from you.

Exciting stuff coming ahead! Cheers.
