Table Pong Project Brings Classic Atari Game To The Real World

Atari’s PONG is made into a physical, table top, air-hockey style game.

PONG was one of the earliest arcade video games developed by Atari in the 1970s. It was the first ever sports arcade game based on table tennis, hence the name PONG. It featured simple 2D graphics with a gameplay so simple that it became a huge commercial success. It inspired many companies to produce games that copied and built upon PONG with various consoles and digital platforms.

But nothing quite like this has been made. A team in Uruguay successfully turned the game into a physical table top version complete with moving paddles and ball. Daniel Perdomo said that the game was in development for two years, with he and his friends working on it during their spare time. And in case you were wondering, they did it without any background in electronics, product design or manufacturing. Looking at the finished prototype, you wouldn’t think that they picked up the skills just from Google, YouTube or forums.

Like the original arcade game, players control their respective paddles on either side of the table with knobs, and the angle that the ball hits the paddles changes its trajectory.

According to Daniel, they still require lots of work to make a production ready prototype, and are looking for investors and a hardware incubator to make this project a reality.
